How many oceans are there on earth?
According to National Geographic, there is ‘one world ocean’ but that most geographers separate it into 4 oceans – Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic. The Pacific is the largest and deepest of the four oceans. The average depth is 4,267 meters. (10+3)
“The deepest part of the (Pacific) ocean is called the Challenger Deep and is located beneath the western Pacific Ocean in the southern end of the Mariana Trench, which runs several hundred kilometers southwest of the U.S. territorial island of Guam. Challenger Deep is approximately 11,030 meters (10+4) deep. It is named after the British survey ship Challenger II, which first surveyed the trench in 1951.” From NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
For a Powers of 10 project, what would type of life forms would you find at the depth of 4,267 meters.
